Does Clutter Really Matter? The Figures Don’t Lie

When there are countless workplace, family and social stressors competing for our

time and attention, the negative effects of living in a cluttered and unorganised home

can be easily overlooked; what does a chaotic filing system or tightly stuffed

wardrobe matter in the face of our child feeling unable to attend school, a health

issue or the cost-of-living crisis?

Actually, it matters quite a lot. When our home, the one space we should most feel at

ease and in control is disordered, it takes its toll on us in ways that can be hard to

quantify but which nonetheless reduces our capacity to bear life’s bigger, more

complex challenges.

That toll has been measured in new research undertaken by The Furl, a British

design company specialising in space-saving furniture and storage.

In a survey of more than 2000 respondents nationwide, “Britain’s Clutter Report

2026” identified that ‘Clutter is fuelling, stress, embarrassment and arguments’ in

homes across the country.

The survey found that:

52% of people secretly hide their clutter

51% find living with clutter stressful

43% experience household arguments because of it

41% feel embarrassed by their homes

37% avoid having guests over because of mess

To carry any feelings of judgement, shame, frustration or embarrassment because

we aren’t properly managing the very items we bought to make our lives better in

some way, means that something needs to change.

Taking control of your possessions to limit clutter, maximise storage and organise

items so they’re easy to access and actually enjoy, can have a significant positive

impact on every aspect of your home life.

Less stress, fewer arguments, and the confidence to host friends and family

overnight all contributes to feeling good about where you live and who you live with

and this is important; when you feel positive at home, you are better equipped to

face the challenges outside of it.

Depending on the size of your home and the volume of items within it, getting things

in order can feel like a mammoth task but you don’t have to tackle it on your own.

Professional organisers help make the process of decluttering and organising living

spaces an efficient one. We are there to help you with initiating tasks, making

decisions, moving the items you no longer need along in an intentional, sustainable way and assist with establishing routines and systems that make your new, organised home easier to maintain.
